CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Heavy snow that fell on Atlantic Canada has led to the cancellations of flights and school classes in the region.

All flights out of Charlottetown Airport in Prince Edward Island were canceled after Tuesday's snow and all schools in the province closed for the day, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Tuesday.

The province's Department of Transportation recommended that all residents remain in their homes unless travel is absolutely necessary.

The CBC said the storm system is expected to drop heavy snows on southern parts of New Brunswick later Tuesday before traveling overnight toward Cape Breton and Newfoundland. The storm is expected to intensify Wednesday, the CBC said.

Meanwhile, thousands of homes remained without power Tuesday in Newfoundland after a storm swept through the region during the weekend. The news organization said fully restoring power to the province could take up to a week.
