WARSAW, Poland, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The European Union, Ukraine and Hong Kong have imposed a ban on poultry imports from Poland in light of a bird flu outbreak.

The EU introduced the 30-day ban on Polish poultry exports from five counties in central Poland where the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus was registered on farms near Plock, 60 miles northwest of Warsaw, Polish Radio said Tuesday.

More than 10,000 turkeys were culled during the weekend in two villages in the Plock region.

Medical tests Monday proved the virus had spread from turkey farms to a farm nearby where two hens died of bird flu, the report said.

However, Plock authorities remained confident there was no need to widen the danger zone beyond the region since they had undertaken all measures necessary to control the outbreak.
