WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Police are still investigating why a man from Caswell County, N.C., slammed head on into another car while driving the wrong way on the highway.

All five people involved were pronounced dead on the scene, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Troopers spent Sunday examining the scene of the wreck, sorting through the remains of the two vehicles, which were both engulfed in flames, and notifying the families of the five killed, The Winston-Salem Journal reported Monday.

Sgt. Doug Amos said it will likely be a few days before investigators know the cause of the accident.

"Alcohol, drugs or driver fatigue -- we don't know right now," he said.

Jason Thomas Smith, 23, was driving alone in his pickup truck when he collided head-on in the inside lane with a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by DeShawn Douglas, 24, of Winston-Salem.

Douglas was accompanied by Edward Henderson, 23, Shamika Lisa Burt, 18, and Bianca M. Harrington, 18.
