Top N.H. newspaper backs McCain campaign

MANCHESTER, N.H., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The most influential newspaper in New Hampshire is supporting Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

The Sunday edition of the New Hampshire Union Leader, the state's largest newspaper, details its support of the Republican candidate, despite his stance on campaign finance reform.

"What is most compelling about McCain, however, is that his record, his character and his courage show him to be the most trustworthy, competent and conservative of all those seeking the nomination," the newspaper said. "Simply put, McCain can be trusted to make informed decisions based on the best interests of his country, come hell or high water."

The newspaper, which traditionally has been highly influential among the state's Republican voters, also tabbed McCain as the best candidate to lead the country based on his qualifications.

McCain told CNN he was pleased to receive the newspaper's endorsement.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the New Hampshire Union Leader, the only statewide newspaper in the Granite State," McCain said.
