U.S. withdraws UN resolution on Mideast

NEW YORK, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, introduced a resolution on the Mideast peace agreement without consulting the parties involved.

The resolution was withdrawn from consideration by the Security Council on Friday, The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

An unnamed State Department official told the Times that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Khalilzad during a meeting Thursday to ask him why he was introducing the resolution. Israeli Ambassador Dan Gillerman said that country did not want the Security Council to become involved in a resolution on last week's Annapolis meeting.

"We have looked at this, and, at the end of the day, the secretary believes that the positive results of Annapolis speak for themselves and there is really no reason to gild the lily," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. "Sometimes the results and the event speak for themselves."

Khalilzad's deputy withdrew the resolution while the ambassador was in Washington for a "pre-scheduled" meeting with Rice.
