Turkey's cabinet backs strike in Iraq

ANKARA, Turkey, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Turkey's cabinet has endorsed Parliament's decision for the army to enter Iraq to rout Kurdish rebels from their hideouts.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not say whether the cabinet's support meant military operations in Iraq were imminent, the BBC reported Saturday.

Erdogan told reporters in Ankara the cabinet voted Wednesday to authorize cross border strikes against the Kurdistan Workers Party, the PKK, which Turkey blames for a recent rise in attacks.

Since mid-October, Turkey has sent an estimated 100,000 soldiers to the border it shares with Iraq.

Erdogan said Friday the United States continues to share intelligence with Turkey and to pressure the semi-autonomous government in northern Iraq to crack down on PKK rebels, who seek greater autonomy in Turkey, MSNBC reported Saturday.
