Israeli polls: Annapolis summit failed

JERUSALEM, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Israeli polls published in the wake of the Annapolis, Md., peace summit suggested Israelis overwhelmingly believe the conference was a failure.

Fifty percent of respondents in a poll taken by Hebrew-language newspaper Yediot Aharonot said the summit failed and 18 percent said the meeting was a success, the Jerusalem Post reported Friday. Some 32 percent of respondents said they were unsure whether the conference succeeded or failed.

Haaretz's dialogue poll found similar results, with 42 percent of those polled saying the conference failed and 17 percent touting its success.

A Ma'agar Mohot poll on Israel Radio found 56 percent of respondents thought it was too early to judge the outcome of the summit. Among those who expressed opinions on the outcome, 29 percent said the meeting failed and 15 percent said it succeeded.

A source close to right-wing political party Israel Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman said, "The poll showed that the public is not stupid, and the voters realize from the way that Lieberman toned down the summit, that he can have a lot more influence from inside the government."
