Homeless shelter boots Salvation Army guy

BARRE, Vt., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A man who volunteered as a Salvation Army bell ringer got booted from a homeless shelter in Vermont.

Officials at the Good Samaritan Haven in Barre said they handed Paul Tucker an eviction notice because he is not working to become independent, The Montpelier Times Argus reported. He receives a small stipend for his Salvation Army work, not enough to pay for an apartment.

"Dear Paul, Good Samaritan Haven will no longer support individuals volunteering for the Salvation Army. We provide housing for those trying to get their lives in order," the notice read.

Tucker said he received the notice Sunday night, and was given until Dec. 1 -- less than a week -- "to find alternative housing."

Executive Director Paul Mascitti said 141 of the 232 people who stayed at the shelter last year had permanent housing by the time they left.

Tucker said he has made efforts to find a better job but has found few opportunities. He said he may have overstayed his welcome at the shelter, where he has lived for nine months.
