DNA tests in Madeleine case 'inconclusive'

BIRMINGHAM, England, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- British and Portuguese investigators reportedly have concluded that "inconclusive" DNA results do not provide evidence to charge Madeleine McCann's parents.

Four Portuguese police officers traveled to Britain for a meeting Thursday in Birmingham with investigators for the Forensic Science Service, The Daily Mail reported. They discussed the results of tests on material from Kate and Gerry McCann's vacation apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve and DNA found in the trunk of a car the couple rented after their daughter vanished.

The McCanns, doctors in Rothley, Leicestershire, were named as suspects in the case in September, four months after their 4-year-old daughter disappeared while they ate dinner in a nearby restaurant. Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the couple, called on Portuguese police to drop the designation.

"We are hopeful this meeting will help speed up the process eliminating Kate and Gerry from the inquiry," he said. "They just want the injustice of being suspects to end and the real job of finding Madeleine to resume in earnest."
