China may execute fake drug makers

BEIJING, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Manufacturers of counterfeit drugs could face the death penalty in China if their products cause "extremely severe harm."

The State Food and Drug Administration, working with the Supreme Court and the Supreme Procuratorate, announced the draft proposal Wednesday, The Shanghai Daily reported. The draft called for execution if counterfeits cause severe injuries to more than three people or lesser injury to more than 10.

Drug manufacturers or sellers would receive life sentences if their products cause any injuries. They would also be subject to heavy fines.

China has been under fire for exporting dangerous products. In July, Zheng Xiaoyu, who had been in charge of regulation for the Food and Drug Administration, was put to death for taking bribes to allow the sale of drugs that caused at least 10 deaths.
