WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The United States cannot impose its vision of peace in the Middle East but it can help facilitate the process, President George W. Bush said Wednesday.
"We can't dictate the results," Bush told CNN. "It's got to be a Palestinian vision and an Israeli vision where they find common ground."
Bush's comments come the day after a conference in Annapolis, Md., in which Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed on a framework for future peace talks, establishing the end of 2008 as a goal for completing a treaty. Diplomats from throughout the Middle East attended the meeting.
Asked what he would do to move negotiations forward, Bush said "it depends on the circumstances." But, he added, a personal visit to the region would not further the peace process.
"Going to a region is not going to unstick negotiations," Bush said.
