Bhutto seeks meeting with Sharif

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Former Pakistan Premier Benazir Bhutto reportedly wants to meet Nawaz Sharif, another former premier, to discuss the country's political situation.

The opposition leaders have returned to Pakistan from exile and are posing a challenge to President Pervez Musharraf, who is scheduled to step down as army chief and become a civilian president Thursday. The country is set for elections in January but it is not clear if Musharraf will lift his emergency rule prior to the polls.

Bhutto leads the Pakistan People's Party, and Sharif, whom Musharraf removed from power in 1999 in a bloodless coup, heads a faction of the Pakistan Muslim League. Sharif has not given any indication of making a deal with Bhutto.

Bhutto told reporters in Karachi she and Sharif need to talk because of the delicate situation in the country, Dawn reported.

Earlier, there had been reports of power-sharing talks between Bhutto and Musharraf but those talks have ended since the emergency declaration.

Bhutto said the country is witnessing a rise in militancy and extremism. She said the international community wants Pakistan to make a smooth transition to democracy through free and fair elections.
