NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- The late Brooke Astor's elderly son has been indicted in New York on charges of mishandling his mother's fortune, sources told The New York Times.
Anthony D. Marshall, 83, his mother's only child, was ordered to surrender Tuesday along with Francis X. Morrissey, one of Astor's former lawyers and a partner with Marshall in a theater production company, the Times reported Tuesday.
The exact charges against Marshall and Morrissey were not known, the Times reported. Marshall was not available for comment and Morrissey, through a lawyer, denied any wrongdoing, the Times reported.
Astor, who died in August at age 105, was the center of a legal battle that began in 2006 when Marshall's son, Philip Marshall, 54, publicly accused his father of neglecting Astor's care while trying to enrich himself from her $192 million fortune, the Times reported.
A grand jury has been hearing evidence regarding Marshall's management of the estate and Morrissey's role in the signing of an amendment to Astor's will, the Times reported.
