DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A police officer in Delray Beach, Fla., shot a pit bull this week after the agitated animal attacked a man and his golden retriever.

Delray Beach police Officer R.C. Bowers said he resorted to firing a single shot at the pit bull after his pepper spray and Taser proved ineffective in stopping the animal's violent attack, The Palm Beach Post reported Saturday.

Police said Brian Ganey, 32, was with his wife and their dog, Muskie, at a coffee shop Thursday when the 5-year-old pit bull suddenly attacked.

A second pit bull also was outside the coffee shop barking but did not attack, police said.

Bowers said after his initial attempts to stop the enraged dog failed, he shot the animal once to stop the incident from escalating.

Ganey and Muskie received medical attention for their various wounds. The wounded pit bull's owner said his pet was euthanized immediately, the Post reported.
