Queen presides over Commonwealth summit

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- England's Queen Elizabeth II on Friday presided over the opening of the annual British Commonwealth Summit being held this year in Uganda.

The three-day session involves 53 nations and is being dominated this year by the political turmoil in member-nation Pakistan, the Voice of America reported.

Other issues up for discussion include trade, climate change and an overall strengthening of democracy.

Democracy was also on the minds of protesters who clashed with Kampala police outside the conference venue. Leaders were demanding that the commonwealth address shortcomings in the host nation's democratic system.
