D.B. Cooper still a mystery after 36 years

SEATTLE, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The FBI still has an open file on D.B. Cooper, who hijacked an airplane and parachuted out near the Oregon-Washington line in 1971.

Saturday is the 36th anniversary of the jump.

FBI Agent Larry Carr asked for the case this year because he is fascinated by it, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. Carr, like many other case agents, said he believes that Cooper is long dead.

"I think D. B. Cooper died the night he jumped," said Carr.

Cooper hijacked a plane flying from Portland to Seattle by claiming to have a bomb. He allowed other passengers to leave the plane in Seattle, exchanging them for $200,000 and four parachutes and told the pilot to head for Mexico.

Several people have been identified over the years as possibly being D.B. Cooper but no leads have panned out and none of the suspects has completely matched the description of the hijacker, the Post-Intelligencer said.
