N.Y. churches facing sweatshop allegations

NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- St. Patrick's Cathedral and Trinity Church in New York have suspended sales of crucifixes after being accused of using sweatshop labor to manufacture them.

Charles Kernaghan -- director of the anti-sweatshop non-profit National Labor Committee -- told The New York Post the churches used Chinese sweatshops to make the crucifixes.

"If they can't get it right, who is going to get it right?" said Kernaghan.

However, Singer Co. President Gerald Singer -- whose company supplies Trinity Church with the crucifixes -- said the items are made in China, but not in sweatshops.

"We know they're made in China," Singer said. "As far as we know, it is not in a sweatshop and has never been one."

Church officials told the Post they have begun an investigation into the sweatshop allegations to determine whether they are valid.
