Man charged with claiming to be lawyer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A Florida man has been charged with misrepresenting himself as a lawyer, using his charm and connections to win real clients.

Robert Charles Jones Brady Jr. of Fort Lauderdale is being held in lieu of $350,000 bail, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Investigators say that Brady was so convincing he was introduced to former Sen. Fred Thompson at a fundraiser for his presidential campaign.

"Evidently he's a good talker," said Detective John Calabro of the Broward County Sheriff's Office. "He's a very smooth, convincing con artist with a smile."

Investigators say that Brady claimed to be a Harvard Law School graduate. Calabro, in an affidavit, said that a Pompano Beach company hired him to deal with a lien problem and he filed a forged document that led to the collapse of a $2.9 million land deal.

Lawrence Livoti, Brady's lawyer, said that his client did not claim to have a law degree. He said that Brady was working as a paralegal for his stepfather, James Eddy, a former Republican state legislator.
