Inquest begins into Smith son's death

NASSAU , Bahamas, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A Bahamas inquest panel looking into the death of Anna Nicole Smith's son, Daniel, heard the mother had to be physically removed from her son after his death.

Dr. James Iferenta, head of the emergency room at Doctors Hospital, told the seven-member panel that doctors spent about 25 minutes trying to revive the 20-year-old after his Sept. 10, 2006, death, and the boy's mother became emotional and refused to let go of her son's body, The Nassau (Bahamas) Guardian reported Tuesday.

The doctor said several people had to work to forcibly separate the grieving mother, who had recently given birth to a baby girl, from her son's body.

Iferenta said he was told by Anna Nicole Smith's nurse that Daniel Smith had been found unconscious next to his mother on her bed. His fingers had turned blue, a sign that his blood had been deoxygenated, Iferenta said.

The customs agent who cleared Daniel Smith when he entered the Bahamas the night before his death testified that he had appeared normal and requested a 90-day stay in the country, which had been granted.
