RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- President George Bush was greeted by a host of Virginia politicians upon landing in Richmond Monday where he honored a dedicated food shelf volunteer.
Bush also was to visit the site of a Virginia Thanksgiving gathering may have preceded that of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
Bush was greeted by Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell, and U.S. Reps. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, J. Randy Forbes, R-4th, and Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, D-3rd.
The presidential motorcade visited the Central Virginia Foodbank to honor food shelf volunteer Paul Anderson with the President's Volunteer Service Award, said a news release from the White House. Anderson has logged more than 500 hours of volunteer service this year.
The president also was to visit the Berkeley Plantation in Charles City County, Va., where it is claimed the first Thanksgiving took place Dec. 4, 1619, more than two years before the Pilgrims observed what is generally recognized as the first Thanksgiving.
