Norway banks on German tree shortage

STAVANGER, Norway, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Norway has become the newest Christmas tree exporter to Germany, which has recently seen a shortage of festive trees.

Norway is sending Christmas trees to Germany for commercial sale to the general public for the first time. Demand has risen because of a tree shortage on the continent.

Demand has soared for Norwegian Christmas trees in Germany for the first time, Aftenposten reported Monday.

Norway was already a heavy exporter of trees to England but the shortage in Germany has opened a new market.

The Norwegian newspaper Nationen reported that the first trucks loaded with trees headed south last week.

Producers in Rogaland, in southwestern Norway, have have shipped more than 1,000 trees to Germany and expect the number to reach 15,000 by the end of the year.
