Canada body-parts murder victim identified
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Federal investigators have found no problems with navigation systems on a Chinese container ship that hit a bridge in San Francisco Bay.
The collision last week ripped a gash in the side of the Cosco Busan, sending 58,000 gallons of fuel oil into the bay.
A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday the ship's two radar systems would be unlikely to fail simultaneously, The San Jose Mercury News reported. The crew blamed a radar failure for the collision with one of the piers of the Bay Bridge.
The NTSB also reported that Coast Guard monitors were concerned enough about the vessel to radio the pilot, John Cota. He confirmed he was proceeding under the bridge.
The monitors can advise ships in the bay but do not have the authority to order them to change course.
The spill fouled beaches in the bay and along the coast north and south of San Francisco.
