ANTOFAGASTA , Chile, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- An area of Chile north of Santiago was rocked Thursday by earthquakes and aftershocks of magnitudes greater than 6 on the Richter scale.

The temblors struck the area offshore of Antofagasta that was hit by a deadly 7.7-magnitude quake Wednesday in which at least two deaths were reported, CNN said.

One quake measured 6.8 and another measured 6.2, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, in addition to aftershocks.

"People are really scared," Valentina Bustos in Antofagasta told CNN. Authorities are telling people to "stay calm (and) help is being sent," she said.

Bustos said buildings have been evacuated and educational facilities have been closed.

CNN showed video of cars crushed beneath buildings, home furnishings moving across floors and items toppling off tables and ledges.
