Three arrested after torso turns up

CHICAGO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A hit and run case "right out of an episode of 'CSI'" was brought to an end after the driver of the vehicle turned himself in through a Chicago church.

Marcus Hampton, 26, was driving to pick up his girlfriend when he allegedly hit 60-year-old Michael Cranston, severing his legs and sending his torso through the windshield into the car, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

But, Hampton did not stop and allegedly drove the body to an industrial area about 12 miles from the accident scene, then enlisted his girlfriend, Shawanda Smith, 28, and her brother Anthony Smith Jr., 26, to dump and burn the car near Blue Island, Ill., said officials.

Cranstons legs were found, white socks still on, by two women walking near the scene of the hit and run.

The Smiths were arrested and charged Wednesday, and Hampton turned himself later that night.

Shawanda Smith was charged with arson and obstruction of justice and Anthony Smith with obstruction of justice. Police said Hampton faces an additional charge of leaving the scene of an injury accident.
