Elderly N.Y. woman robbed of $75,000

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- An 80-year-old woman says two armed men made off with $75,000 in cash from her New York apartment recently after binding her arms and legs.

Carmen Niezes said the two unidentified men claimed to be flower delivery men, but that they turned into frightening criminals once she let them into her apartment Nov. 3, the New York Post reported Sunday.

She said the thieves tore the apartment apart, finding $75,000 she and her husband had been collecting their entire lives.

"We were planning on putting it in a bank," Niezes said of the missing cash. "He was planning on opening a restaurant."

Her husband, Michael Rodriguez, said the daring robbery may have been the result of him being too open with information. He said he had informed a man at a local bakery that he and his wife were keeping the money in their home with the goal of opening a restaurant.

"I worked 47 years and now I'm retired and they took all my money," he told the Post.
