Chad releases Spanish kidnapping suspects

N'DJAMENA, Chad, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Chad's government has released three members of a Spanish flight crew allegedly involved in a plot to kidnap 103 African children.

Officials said that in addition to allowing the three Spanish citizens to return home as soon as possible, they also were allowing a Belgian pilot previously linked to the alleged crime to leave Chad, as well, the BBC said Saturday.

The four suspects were arrested, along with 13 other individuals, in October after allegedly attempting to take the African children out of the country aboard a charter flight.

Six French charity workers at the heart of the alleged plot have claimed they were attempting to help orphans from Darfur, while officials have accused them of kidnapping the children. The government officials have said the children have at least one relative they considered a parent.

While three French journalist and four Spanish flight attendants were released last weekend after being detained, the six charity workers have remained in custody.

They are facing lengthy prison sentences if they are convicted of kidnapping or being an accessory to the crime, the BBC reported.
