WARSAW, Poland, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Donald Tusk, whose liberal, pro-European Union Civic Platform won Poland's general elections, Friday was formally appointed the prime minister-designate.
Polish President Lech Kaczynski nominated Tusk, 50, to form a coalition government within two weeks, Polish Radio reported.
In Poland's parliamentary elections Oct. 21, Tusk's center-right, pro-business Civic Platform defeated the conservative, nationalist Law and Justice Party of former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who submitted his government's resignation Monday to his twin brother Lech.
Lech Kaczynski's presidential term expires in 2010.
Tusk has been having talks with Waldemar Pawlak, leader of the centrist Polish Peasant Party on forming a coalition government, whose ministers and policies are to be submitted to parliament for approval.
