NEW SMYRNA, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A Florida man was injured in a shark attack off the state's New Smyrna beach coast.

Joseph Fox, 21, of Deltona, Fla, received nine cuts on his right leg in Tuesday's attack, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

Volusia County beach patrol officials said there have been 17 shark attacks in the area this year. Most occurred in The Point, an area that is popular with surfers.

"You've got all of these guys sitting with their feet dangling in the water, there are bait fish all around, the water's murky," beach patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn told the newspaper. "It's a case of mistaken identity."
