Allergic teen survives egg prank

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A Scottish teenager almost died from a severe allergic reaction after he was hit by eggs thrown by strangers on the street.

Sandy Main, 16, told The Scotsman he went into anaphylactic shock almost immediately after he was hit Monday night in Edinburgh.

"Almost immediately, my chest tightened, my eyes started watering and I couldn't get a breath," he said. "I just collapsed. It was really frightening."

A friend, Paul Gallagher, summoned Main's mother, Marion, who rushed him to a hospital. She said by the time they got to the emergency room he was barely breathing.

She said her son has had a lot of allergies since infancy but the one to eggs is the most severe.

"We always try to be very careful -- but what can you do to stop a freak thing like this?" she said. "I am sure whoever threw those eggs had no idea what effect it would have, but they are lucky they are not responsible for Sandy's death. They could have been facing a murder charge."
