Activity of volcano not viewed as threat

JAKARTA, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Scientists say the current eruption of Indonesia's famous Krakatau volcano poses no immediate danger to people living on the coast of Java and Sumatra.

What remains of the volcano that killed 36,000 people in 1883 has been spewing fiery lava, smoke and ash for more than two weeks now, the Indonesian news agency Antara reported Friday.

Volcano experts say even if a main eruption happened it would pose no threat to the Islands of Sumatra and Java.

Lava flowing from the crater is not visible from the main islands so volcano watchers have been chartering boats to view it.

Indonesia is currently home to some 130 active volcanoes.

In recent weeks several volcanoes have roared to life including Mount Kelut on East Java.
