Man dies in wood chipper accident

TUSTIN, Calif., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Officials were working to recover the remains of an Anaheim, Calif., man who was killed in a wood chipper accident.

The man, working with a tree-trimming crew in nearby Tustin, was tossing branches into the machine, authorities say, then "he was gone," the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The worker "was standing at the back end of the chipper, throwing branches into it with his co-workers nearby," Sgt. Pat Welch of the Tustin Police Department told the newspaper. "One of them looked over, and he was gone."

Authorities took the wood chipper and the truck attached to it to the coroner's office, where they plan to dismantle it.

The accident is being investigated by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, police said.
