IRA chief arrested on tax evasion

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Officials arrested the chief of staff of the Irish Republican Army on tax-evasion charges following years of investigation.

Thomas "Slab" Murphy, the former IRA chief of staff, as detained during an operation by the Criminal Assets Bureau, the Irish Times reported Thursday.

Officials with the CAB arrested Murphy, 58, on suspicion of filing erroneous tax returns. Murphy complained of chest pains and was taken to hospital, though he was later discharged into custody, a Thursday feature in Exec Ireland said.
