BRUSSELS, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Donald Tusk, whose liberal Civic Platform won Poland’s general polls, said his new Cabinet will endeavor to improve relations with the European Union.

Tusk, who is expected to soon be designated prime minister by Polish President Lech Kaczynski, said he would pay special attention to making German-Polish ties more sincere, the EU Observer reported Wednesday.

Kaczynski’s five-year presidential term expires in 2010.

Lech’s twin brother Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski of the conservative Law and Justice past, resigned this week. In the meantime, Tusk talked with the Polish centrist Peasant party on a coalition government.

In parliamentary elections Oct. 21, the pro-business Civic Platform defeated the nationalist Law and Justice party that was at odds with Brussels officials and a number of EU countries.

In his recent statements, Tusk indicated he may reconsider Polish agreement about a Washington plan to deploy an interceptor-missiles base on Polish territory as part of an missile shield system in Eastern Europe.

In an another foreign policy issue, Tusk is known for his opposition to involvement of foreign troops, including 900 Polish soldiers, in Iraq.
