Clinton, Giuliani keep double-digit leads

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A national poll shows Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Republican ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani lead their parties for the 2008 presidential nomination.

The USA Today-Gallup telephone poll of 1,024 adults nationwide between Nov. 2-4 found 50 percent support for Clinton among Democrats, and 34 percent support for Giuliani among Republicans, the newspaper reported Wednesday.

Figures for other Democrats were: 22 percent for Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and 15 percent for former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

On the Republican side, Arizona Sen. John McCain was second with 18 percent, one point higher than former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson.

Eight weeks before the opening Iowa caucuses, political analyst Charlie Cook told the newspaper the two parties had very different scenarios, with the Democratic race "a locomotive with Hillary Clinton's face on it (and) on the Republican side, it looks like the TV show 'Survivor.'"
