U.S. voters oppose licenses for illegals

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A new poll indicates a large majority of U.S. voters say illegal aliens should not be allowed to obtain driver's licenses.

More than three-quarters of those surveyed for the Fox 5/Washington Times/Rasmussen poll say those in the country illegally should be barred from holding licenses legally, while 16 percent disagreed, The Washington Times reported. Disapproval was highest among Republicans at 88 percent, but 75 percent of independents and 68 percent of Democrats held the same view.

Seven states now allow illegal residents to get licenses. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has proposed adding that state to the list, a move that is unpopular with many of his constituents.

The poll also found strong disapproval for allowing illegal immigrants to obtain other benefits such as government tuition assistance.
