SYDNEY, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Australian Foreign Minister Alexander has denied suggestions Australia is involved in a plot to kill the rebel leader of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama.
Downer told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. the idea was a "completely absurd proposition."
His statement followed recent remarks by Esala Teleni, the Fijian police chief, that "neighboring countries" were financing non-governmental organizations and were implicated in a plot to kill Bainimarama, who seized power in Fiji in a bloodless coup last December.
Fiji police have arrested 15 people, including a New Zealand businessman, for alleged involvement in the assassination plot.
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark also has rejected suggestions the two countries were plotting against Fiji.
"It is completely false to suggest that the Australian government would consider assassinating ... Bainimarama and coup leaders in Fiji ... and it doesn't do any credit to the Fijian regime to suggest that countries like Australia and New Zealand want to go around assassinating them," Downer said.
