Alleged sexual abuser's mother speaks out

SEATTLE, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The mother of a Lake Tapps, Wash., man accused of sexually abusing 20 boys said she became concerned after a 17-year-old moved into his home.

Weldon Marc Gilbert has been accused of sexually abusing and torturing more than 20 boys over the last six years, and his mother said she doesn't know where things went awry, The Seattle Times reported Monday.

Gilbert, 47, who is a pilot, originally supported young men with similar goals to his own, his mother said Sunday.

"He has always supported young men in their quest to develop direction in life; some of those people became pilots," she said, asking that her name not be published.

"He was making a good income and he believed in sharing it," she said. "I was so proud of him."

But she added: "I don't know how things got awry."

Gilbert was arrested at an Atlanta hotel Thursday on nine charges, including child rape, molestation and sexual exploitation of a minor.
