Report: U.S. approves Israeli strike

JERUSALEM, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Israel has U.S. approval for a massive strike against Hamas militants in Gaza, The Jerusalem Post reported Saturday.

The Post quoted a story in the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which cited "credible diplomatic sources" as saying the United States gave its blessing after reviewing Israeli intelligence reports presented by Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

The intelligence reports detail an unprecedented arms buildup within Gaza and extensive use of tunnels to smuggle money, weapons and explosives between Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in Egypt, the Post reported.

Israel has not set a date for its attack because it fears complicating this month's U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace summit in Annapolis, Md.

In the meantime, Israeli troops stationed on the Gaza border will continue training for a large-scale military operation in Gaza, the Post reported.
