BIRMINGHAM, England, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- New lab tests done in Britain suggest Madeleine McCann's body was in the car her parents rented after she disappeared in Portugal, The Daily Mail reports.

The newspaper cited sources that said that the traces of bodily fluid found in the car trunk were too great to have been transferred from her possessions. The tests were done by the British Forensic Science Services in Birmingham.

Kate and Gerry McCann said 4-year-old Madeleine was snatched from their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, six months ago while they ate dinner with friends a short distance away. In September, the Portuguese police said that the couple had become suspects.

The McCanns rented the car 25 days after Madeleine was last seen. They remained in Portugal for weeks, using it as a base while they traveled Europe to publicize the search for their daughter.

"Kate and Gerry are entirely innocent and have nothing to hide," said Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the couple. "We have always maintained whatever material or evidence the police may have can be wholly and innocently explained."
