Ireland considers bugging gangsters

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The Irish government is considering using electronic surveillance against gangsters.

Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan said the country has an "unprecedented number" of organized criminal groups in its cities, The Irish Times reported. Bugging the homes and cars of known gangsters would be another investigative technique.

Lenihan said a recent surge in homicides involving organized gangs does not mean the government is losing the fight.

"There seems to be a suggestion that people are not being brought to justice but there are record numbers in our prisons," he said.

Noel Conroy, who is about to retire as commissioner of the Garda or National Police, spoke at a police graduation ceremony. He blamed the growth in gangs on widespread drug use.
