NABLUS, West Bank, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The Palestinian Authority deployed 300 police officers Friday in an effort to gain control in Nablus, a West Bank hotbed of sectarian violence.
The move was backed by Israel, Voice of America reported. It comes as Israel and the authority prepare for this month's peace conference in Annapolis, Md.
"This is in the interest of Palestinians: They must maintain one gun, one authority and the rule of law," said Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian negotiator.
Israel gave control of the West Bank cities to the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo Accords but resumed military operations in 2000 after the Second Intifada began in 2000.
Mark Regev, a spokesman for the Israeli government, said Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has an opportunity to show he can bring Nablus under control.
