Security Council passes Sudan resolution

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council unanimously passed a resolution extending the U.N. mission in Sudan and urged compliance with peace agreements in the African country.

U.N. Resolution 1784 extended the mandate for the U.N. mission in Sudan to April 30 and requests the secretary-general report on its progress every three months.

A statement from the United Nations noted that the resolution highlights the “importance of full and expeditious implementation of all elements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.”

The CPA was signed in January 2005 by members of Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the government of Sudan to end civil conflict there.

Implementing the CPA is integral to resolving the crisis in Darfur, the statement read.

The statement noted that Resolution 1784 advocated a “full deployment in Darfur of the hybrid U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force” to enforce the CPA.

The U.N. statement said that the ability of the humanitarian community to reach affected people was affected by the conflict there.
