Pair held for bringing knives on airliner

ATLANTA, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Two airline passengers have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle a number of knives and box cutters aboard a plane at the Atlanta airport.

The incident took place last week when baggage screeners spotted 20 small knives, several box-cutter blades and a large “Chinese-style fighting knife” in their luggage, WAGA-TV in Atlanta reported Thursday.

Atlanta police said the knives had been wrapped in foil while the blades were secreted in the battery compartment of a toy car.

"It was an intentional concealment," said Police Lt. Jim Corlino.

WAGA said one suspect was identified as 60-year-old Chhaganbhai Patel. Patel and another man were ticketed for a flight from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to India via New York.

Patel told police he had wrapped up the implements so they wouldn’t damage the clothing in his bag; however he and his traveling companion were jailed anyway on weapons charges.
