EUSTIS, Fla., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A raid on a major cockfighting ring in Florida turned up 300 roosters and hens pumped full of steroids.

Police in Eustis told WKMG-TV in Orlando the birds had been bred to fight to the death.

"These roosters have been raised for absolutely no other reason than to fight, and they've been pumped full of steroids, so they really have no other use. They're not safe to eat," Lake County Sheriff's Department Sgt. John Herrell said.

Police said they also recovered thousands of dollars in cash, weapons allegedly attached to the birds and illegal narcotics.

A 67-year-old man and his 40-year-old son were charged with cruelty to animals, WKMG-TV said.
