OXFORD, Ohio, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A student art display featuring nooses hanging from a tree was removed from the Oxford, Ohio, campus of Miami University.

Miami University President David Hodge said he was told the art project was not intended to be racially motivated, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Wednesday.

"I am deeply troubled by this incident and the insensitivity that it reflects," Hodge wrote in an e-mail message to the community.

Jean Lentini, dean of the School of Fine Arts, said in a statement that "the placement of such socially charged symbols in public view violates good judgment."
