Hackers break into Barclay's Bank

LONDON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Hackers broke into Barclay Bank's online accounts to order jewelry, electronics and cash transfers, The Times of London reported Monday.

The computer bank robbers stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from at least 10 accounts, including $120,000 from one man's mortgage account, The Times reported.

Barclays intercepted much of the fraud and stopped at least $1 million being stolen from clients, said officers from the Dedicated Check and Plastic Crime Unit, who suspect there are more victims yet to be discovered.

The hackers obtained enough private information to convince a bank they were the customer and then ordered a new debit or credit card with a new password, Officer D.C. Harrington told the newspaper.

“The whole operation from start to finish takes a few days and usually by the time anyone notices the money has gone the gang will have bought the goods and sold them on,” Harrington said.

One victim returned from a trip to Thailand to find the hackers had used a debit card with his name to buy $120,000 worth of jewelry in Barcelona, The Times report said.
