British MP miffed at second U.S. search

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A Muslim member of Britain's Parliament is annoyed he was detained for a second time at a Washington airport for an explosives search.

International Development Minister Shahid Malik is the country's first Muslim minister, and told the BBC he was detained so his carry-on luggage could be searched at the Dulles International Airport on Sunday before his flight home.

He said two other Muslims were also taken aside for extra screening.

It was the second such incident in Washington for Malik in almost a year.

"The abusive attitude I endured last November I forgot about and I forgave, but I really do believe that British ministers and parliamentarians should be afforded the same respect and dignity at (U.S.) airports that we would bestow upon our colleagues in the Senate and Congress," he told the BBC.

Malik was in Washington to speak at a conference organized by the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and Muslim organizations, about extremism and terrorism.
