Mattel issues recall of 55,000 toys

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. toy firm Mattel Inc. says it has recalled 55,000 of its Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat toys “due to impermissible levels of lead.�

The company, with headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., said Thursday the Fisher-Price toy has two painted logos that may be affected.

The company said it sourced a piece of the product for molding and painting in China, where a subcontractor used unauthorized paint.

The toys were sold after June 2007 in the United States, Britain, Canada and the Irish Republic. No other country is affected, the company said.

The announcement said the voluntary recall decision was taken after extensive investigation of toys made prior to the implementation of the company’s three-point check testing system. It said the company is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and applicable regulatory agencies in the other affected countries to identify the recalled products.

The latest recall marks the fourth the company has made in the past three months, Britain’s Telegraph reported.
