Poland's new Cabinet to accept EU charter

WARSAW, Poland, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Poland’s Civic Platform, which is to form a new coalition government, said the country will adopt an EU charter on personal, political and economic rights.

Bronislaw Komorowski of the liberal, pro-EU Civic Platform which won parliamentary elections Sunday, said Poland will accept the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights as part of the Lisbon Treaty, Polish Radio reported Thursday.

The outgoing conservative government of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski hadn't fully approved the charter and instead accepted the so-called British protocol that provides for limited application in Britain and Poland, the radio report said.

Komorowski, who is slated for the office of parliamentary speaker, described as ridiculous reservations that Anna Fotyga, outgoing foreign minister, voiced about the EU rights charter.

Fotyga told a Polish television station the charter may open the way to German compensation claims for Polish property, which used to be part of Germany before World War II.
