OMAHA, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Bob Kerrey, a former governor and U.S. Senator, said he has decided against running in Nebraska's Senate primary.

Democrats were encouraging Kerrey, 64, to join the race to replace Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who announced last month wouldn't seek re-election, WOWT-TV, Omaha, Neb., said Wednesday.

Kerrey cited family and his work as president of New School University in New York in his decision not to run.

WOWT-TV said Democrats will likely turn to Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey as their next choice.
